Workshop Initiation to Kathak (beginner)
Kathak is the North Indian classical dance whose name means "story, tale" in Sanskrit. It's also The techniques of Kathak tell stories through a choreographic language expressed by mudra (hand gestures), footwork, facial expressions and body positions.
The workshop
The workshop will be given by Sarah, who has been practicing Kathak for a few years. She is formed by Nutan Patwardhan, head of the Kathak Department at the prestigious Nalanda University in Bombay, and her daughter Ketaki Samarth.
- salutation (namaskar) at the beginning and the end of the workshop
- introduction to rhythm (taal) with hands and speech
- hands movement (hastak) and their position (mudras)
- footwork (tatkar)
- gaze (nasar)
- some tukdas: composition of simple choreographic sentences
