Workshop Initiation to Kathak (beginner)    

Kathak is the North Indian classical dance whose name means "story, tale" in Sanskrit. It's also The techniques of Kathak tell stories through a choreographic language expressed by mudra (hand gestures), footwork, facial expressions and body positions. Grace, emotion and precision of gestures and rhythms are its primordial qualities.  
 

The workshop 

- introduction to rhythm (taal) with hands and speech
- hands movement (hastak)
- posititon of the hands (mudras)
- foot work
- some tukdas: composition of simple choreographic sentences      

The internship will be given by Sarah, who has been practicing Kathak for a few years. She is formed by Nutan Patwardhan, head of the Kathak Department at the prestigious Nalanda University in Bombay, and her daughter Ketaki Samarth. Several of her students are famous choreographers.
